Visual Compensation and Diagnostic for Central Vision Loss

Description:

Age-related degenerative eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, are common eye conditions that leads to irreversible vision loss among people over 50. These diseases cause damage to the macula, retina or the optic nerve, and advance slowly. Current treatments only attempt to slow the progression of the disease but don’t determine the degree of perceptual vision loss. As many as 14 million people in the United States have some form of age-related neurodegenerative eye disease. This number is expected to double to nearly 22 million by 2050. This is a novel innovation that measures a patient's vision loss by utilizing a head-mounted display (HMD) and utilizes this data to deliver specialized visual aid to that patient.  Specifically, the patient is fitted with an HMD that provides the visual aid to correct the specific area(s) of vision deficit. The product is capable of determining the perceptual vision loss and using a computational dichoptic solution to compensate for the patient’s perception loss while providing a mechanism to determine the disease perceptual impacts.  

Advantages

  • This headset utilizes the received information to compensate for the vision loss via a low-vision visual aid system.
  • There are currently no available commercial products to compete with this system.
  • There are no foreseen risks associated with this approach.
