The Global Military Simulation and the Virtual Training Market is projected to have a value US$10.2 billion in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.12% a year. Maritime simulators are now the modern way to gain competence. It started with basic ship driving and now extend to almost every aspect of ship operation including all special aspects such as automated multi-ship scenario generation, traffic separation scheme, crane handling etc. Thus a simulation trainer can be used to teach and practice ship driving in accordance with the nautical rules of the road. In the same way that knowing the Rules of Road (ROR) for cars does not make a person a good car driver, knowing the US Coast Guard’s navigation rules of the road does not make a person good mariner. You need experience and understanding of traffic configurations, timing and a feel for a ship and sea conditions, before one can be a good marine.
Description
Our researchers at University of Nevada, Reno have developed a simulation trainer for learning and practicing knowledge of the Nautical Rules of Road (RoR), helps learn nautical rules of the road in context while gaining valuable virtual experience in ship driving. The simulation training environment can be used for teaching and helping instructors assess a student’s knowledge, and seamanship skills for following nautical rules of the road in situations ranging from simple two-vessel scenarios to crowded, high density environments.
